Hoorn is located in the West-Friesland region in the province of North Holland.
Among Hoorn’s most notable 17th- and 18th-century landmarks are Weigh House (1609), St. Jansgasthuis (Jans Hospital, 1563), the Bossu Houses (1573)Statencollege (1632),  Statenlogement (1613 ), VOC warehouse (1606), Noorderkerk (1573)Oosterkerk (1616), the Main Tower (Hoofdtoren, 1532)Oosterpoort (Eastern Gate, 1578), Mariatoren or Kruittoren (1578), all reflecting the city’s wealth and importance as a major trading center of the Dutch Golden Age.

Roode Steen - Central square of Hoorn was filled with thousands of city residents and tourists watching major triathlon competition IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland. Monument to Jan Pieterszoon Cohen was erected in the central square. Jan Pieterszoon Coen was a Dutch naval officer of the Dutch East India Company.

Weigh House (built in 1609) on Red Stone Square (Roode Steen) used for centuries as a weighing station for goods traded in square. It now houses a restaurant.

Building Statencollege (State College, 1632) on Red Stone Square (Roode Steen) originally built for ‘Committed Councils in West-Friesland and Noorderkwartier’. Currently houses Westfries Museum.

Historical Hoofdtoren (Main Tower) is a defensive tower built in the late Gothic style from 1532. Tower is located in the middle of a harbor district.

Noorderkerk (Northern Church) was built between 1441 and 1519; this is the oldest building in the city of Horn. Church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is therefore known as Vrouwekerk or Mariakerk.

Oosterkerk church (East Church) was built as a Roman Catholic church for fishermen and skippers. Since 1616 the church has had its present form.

On Kerkplein stands the Grote Kerk (Great Church), a listed building, which was built between 1881 and 1883 to a design by the architect Constantijn Muysken.

Oosterpoort (Eastern Gate) is the only surviving of once four city gates. Gate was built in 1578. In 1601 a house was built on top of the Oosterpoort.

Mariatoren or Kruittoren (Mary Tower or Powder Tower) was built in 1508 as defensive tower and gunpowder storage facility. Tower rises on old city wall by canal Drafsingel.

Three Bossu houses at Slapershaven take their name from large sculpted reliefs of the 1573 naval battle on the Zuiderzee. Bossu houses were built around 1612.

St. Jansgasthuis (Jans Hospital, 1563) was built in 1563 and was part of a monastery complex. Monasteries took care of sick at this time and set up hospitals.
